Caring for Babies During a Crisis

06 Dec, 2017 4

By Parenting Expert

Babies require a lot of time and energy—just ask any new parent! For the past 80 years, Finland has provided every expectant mother with a baby box filled with essentials for the newborn. This box includes picture books, a teething toy, gender-neutral clothing, hats, mittens, a snowsuit, a mattress with fitted sheet, baby wash, nail clippers, a hooded towel, and a sleeping bag. The box itself even doubles as a baby’s first bed. Recently, cloth diapers have been reintroduced for environmental reasons, and bottles were removed to encourage breastfeeding.

The Impact of Finland's Baby Box Tradition

The baby box has evolved over the years, but it remains a cherished tradition that has improved prenatal care and reduced infant mortality rates in Finland. Pregnant women become eligible for the maternity pack if they visit a doctor before their fourth month of pregnancy. Mothers are given the option to choose between the baby box or a monetary grant, although most select the box for their first baby and reuse items for subsequent children.

Modern Adaptations of the Baby Box

Inspired by Finland’s success, several commercial companies have developed their own versions of the baby box, with prices ranging from $70 to $700. These boxes vary in contents but generally include essential baby items, making it convenient to store all supplies in one place. If you're interested, you can even create your own baby box by gathering a few key items.

The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is recommended as the ideal form of nutrition for a baby, passing essential antibodies from mother to child and helping the mother recover from childbirth. Breastfeeding is also convenient—it’s free and doesn't take up space. However, it can be challenging, and some mothers may not produce enough milk. A manual breast pump can help, and if needed, formula or milk from livestock can supplement feedings. Unopened infant formula typically lasts about three years, so it's essential to rotate your supply regularly. Any unused formula can be donated to women's shelters or food banks and also makes a thoughtful baby shower gift.

Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers have come a long way. They’re now available in a variety of fun fabrics with adjustable snaps, making them a sustainable option. Modern cloth diapers have two parts: a colorful outer shell and an absorbent pad. These washable diapers are essential during emergencies since stocking up on disposable diapers for every stage of a baby's growth may not be feasible.

Baby Carriers

There are many baby carriers on the market today, each designed to make traveling with a baby more manageable. Carriers allow parents to keep the baby close, providing warmth and comfort, which helps keep the baby calm. They’re also helpful for household tasks and other activities, as parents can move freely while keeping the baby secure.

Safe Baby Spaces: The Pack-n-Play

A pack-n-play provides a safe area for children to play, keeping them secure while parents perform other tasks. Many pack-n-plays also serve as cribs, rockers, or changing areas, offering versatile solutions for parents who want all their baby essentials in one place.

Simple Toys and Books for Development

Books and toys play a vital role in a baby's growth and learning. Simple items like child-safe objects, sticks, or cans can make great games. Having age-appropriate books and toys helps engage children, allowing them to develop curiosity and creativity.
