How to Make your Generator Run Quietly

02 Nov, 2017

Generators are essential when the power goes out, acting as a backup power supply. However, most generators are gas-powered and can be quite loud. This noise can be bothersome, especially if you're using the generator in a residential area or need a quieter environment. Here are a few simple and effective ways to make your generator run smoothly and quietly.

The Muffler Myth

Mufflers work by deflecting sound, causing it to bounce around inside and emerge at a much quieter level. Adding a muffler may reduce noise by 1 or 2 decibels. While this doesn’t make a huge difference in loudness, a muffler can change the frequency or pitch of the noise. For example, a low hum is often more tolerable than a high-pitched squeal. However, be cautious—a large muffler could reduce the generator's efficiency. To compensate, you may need to adjust the jetting on your generator to account for the added exhaust resistance.

Some mufflers are designed to absorb sound rather than deflect it. Absorption mufflers are more effective at reducing noise overall, especially for smaller generators with lower horsepower. These mufflers do not significantly impact the generator’s efficiency.

DIY Portable Generator Noise Shield

You can reduce the noise output of your generator by up to 10 decibels with a simple DIY portable noise shield. For this, you’ll need several sheets of plywood or OSB (oriented strand board). OSB tends to perform slightly better than plywood. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Position the plywood or OSB sheets around the generator at an angle.
  • The sound will be deflected downward toward the ground, where it will be absorbed, while still allowing airflow to keep the generator cool.
  • This setup will make the generator sound approximately four times quieter.

Build a Permanent Quiet Box

If you need a more permanent solution, you can build a quiet box for your generator. This box will help to contain the noise and keep the generator cooler. Here's how to build one:

  • Measure the dimensions of your generator.
  • Build a frame using 2x4 lumber.
  • Screw plywood or OSB boards to the frame to form the walls of the box.
  • Use L brackets to strengthen the corners of the box.
  • Add quiet boards or installation boards inside the box to absorb sound. For a lighter box, consider using insulation instead of heavy boards.
  • Seal any gaps with spray foam to prevent sound from escaping.
  • Make sure to add a hole or fan to allow airflow to prevent the generator from overheating.
  • Optionally, spray paint the box for aesthetics and add a handle on top for easy lifting.

Materials Needed for the Quiet Box:

  • Plywood or OSB
  • 2x4 Lumber
  • L Brackets
  • Screws
  • Quiet Boards or Insulation Boards
  • Spray Foam for Sealing Gaps
  • Spray Paint (optional)
  • Small Fan for Airflow
  • Handle for Easy Lifting
