How to Prepare for a Cyclone

11 Jan, 2018 7

Cyclones, including hurricanes, cause millions of dollars in damage every year. Hurricanes are categorized from 1 to 5 based on their intensity and wind speed. For example, a Category 1 hurricane features winds of 75 miles per hour, while a Category 5 hurricane can have winds as high as 190 miles per hour. The faster the wind speed, the greater the destruction. To stay safe, monitor local news and weather updates, and be prepared to evacuate if an order is issued.

Essential Safety Steps to Take

  • Keep multiple copies of important documents (e.g., birth certificates, insurance policies, bank records) in different locations away from the storm’s path.
  • Store irreplaceable items, like family photos, in waterproof bins in case you need to evacuate quickly.
  • Back up computer files to a secure cloud or an external device stored outside the storm area.
  • Store items in your attic or higher levels of your home, as flooding typically does not affect these areas.
  • Shut off electricity immediately if water enters your home to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Invest in a waterproof safe to protect valuable documents. Water-resistant safes may not survive full submersion.
  • Reinforce windows and doors to prevent wind from entering your home and causing structural damage.
  • Purchase flood insurance. It is much cheaper than taking out a loan for repairs after a storm.
  • Monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center for real-time storm information.
  • Create a disaster supply kit that includes a waterproof flashlight, extra batteries, and emergency food supplies.
  • Plan for pets since most emergency shelters do not allow them. Arrange for a kennel or a friend to care for them safely.
  • Keep trees trimmed to reduce the risk of them falling on your home during high winds.
  • Create a family communication plan and establish a meeting place in case you are separated during the storm.
  • Elevate furniture and move essential items to upper floors to minimize water damage.
  • Turn off your home's water and gas supply as a safety precaution.
  • Prepare plywood to board up windows and doors. Supplies run out quickly when a storm approaches.
  • Bring outdoor furniture, grills, and tools inside to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles during high winds.
  • Remain calm and evacuate quickly if authorities issue an evacuation order. Your safety is the top priority.

By taking these precautions, you can minimize damage to your home and ensure the safety of your family during hurricanes and cyclones.
