Where Should You Hide Your Food Storage?

01 Dec, 2016 162

So you’ve stocked up on enough food and water storage to last a few months—but where will you put it all? More importantly, how will you protect your hard-earned food reserves from potential looters in an emergency? Take a deep breath; we’ve got some clever ideas for securely hiding your food storage.

Store Some of Your Food Storage in Plain View

In case of a break-in, looters are likely to search for food in the most obvious spots, and they won’t stick around for long. By keeping a small amount of food in plain sight, you may prevent them from searching the rest of your home. As a tip, try to keep the extent of your food supply discreet; not everyone needs to know you’re well-stocked.

Make Furniture out of Your Food Storage

Consider using your food storage to create functional furniture. For example, 5-gallon plastic buckets can be stacked to make coffee tables, or you could raise your bed frame to store food underneath. A backboard made from storage containers also works well. For a coffee table, place a strong piece of plywood over the buckets, drape it with a tablecloth, and add decorations to help it blend into your space.

Inside Solid-Colored Boxes

Empty out old boxes for electronics or appliances and fill them with food storage items. Store these boxes in an area where old boxes would naturally be kept, as looters are unlikely to dig through containers they assume are empty or unimportant.

Under Your Garden or in Remote Caches

If you’re considering hiding food storage outside, ensure everything is tightly sealed to keep critters out. Burying food underground can be a practical option if it’s intended for emergency use only. You might also consider adding items like a first aid kit, water packets, flashlights, and even a basic weapon for added security.

Maximize Tight or Crawl Spaces in the Home

Look for unused spaces, like beneath staircases or in the attic, for storage. Concealing food behind hidden wall panels is another effective option. If you need more inspiration, check out the video below on how one prepper maximized space under his sink:

We understand that every home and situation is unique, so not all of these ideas will work for everyone. The goal here is to inspire innovative ways to use available space and effectively hide your food storage from potential looters.
