Do you have old plastic bottles laying around? Plastic bottles make great containers for gardening. Simply cut a hole in the top, bottom, or side and fill with soil. Plant the seed, water, and watch them grow. Many plastic bottle gardens can even water themselves saving you time and effort.

• Make a self-watering garden by cutting a two littler soda bottle in half. Fill the top with soil and the bottom with water. Remove the soda bottle cap. Allow the top to rest in the bottom half. The plant will have its own water supply so you won't need to water it as often. Check to make sure there is plenty of water in the bottom of the bottle now and then. This is a great way to start your seedlings inside.  

• Use PVC pipe to construct a self-watering line. Fill a two littler bottle with water and let it rest it in the PVC pipe. Leave the bottle cap on just poke a few small holes in it. Next, cut several bottles in half and screw the necks into the PVC pipe. Fill with soil and plant the seeds. As the plants need more water they will pull in more water from the PVC pipe. • Going on vacation? Poke some holes in a plastic bottle. Then bury it next to your plants and fill the bottle with water. As the plants need water the bottle will drain into the ground. The larger the bottle you use the longer it will last. Just refill it when you return.

• Make a vertical plastic bottle garden. This is a wonderful conversation piece for the backyard. Vertical gardens are ideal for those with limited space. Collect lots of old plastic water bottles. Measure a small opening in the side of the bottle towards the bottom. Cut both sides so the hole goes all the way through the bottle. Cut a hole in the bottle of the bottle to allow another bottleneck to sit inside it. Attach the cap to the bottle to lock the two bottles together. Poke a few holes in the cap to allow water to drip down to the next plant. Fill the bottom of each bottle with soil and enjoy your garden as it grows. Watch the instructional video below.

• Milk Jugs can be used for many projects. Next time your out of milk wash out the bottle and plant a garden instead of throwing it out. Cut off the top but leave the handle intact. Fill with soil and plant some seeds. Use cordage to tie the handle to the deck or fence to save floor space.

• Pots and containers from the gardening store can add up. Why not use the plastic bottles you have just going in the trash. This is a great way to reuse and recycle. Cut a big hole in the side of a large juice bottle. Fill with soil and set someplace sunny. Grow an herb garden right on your porch.
