Are You Less Prepared Than Your Neighbors?

22 Aug, 2013 2

According to new research, the frequency of natural disasters per year has increased significantly over the past 30 years. While the causes are still debated, the rise in occurrences highlights the growing importance of emergency preparedness. The following table from the Natural Disasters Data Book shows the increase in natural disasters from 1975 to 2010. (Disasters entered the database had at least 10 casualties, affected over 100 people, declared a state of emergency, or called for international assistance.)

How Do You Compare?

A recent National Geographic survey conducted by Kelton Research revealed some surprising insights about American preparedness. Here are a few of the key findings:

How Long Will Your Supplies Last?

Nearly 40% of participants reported that their supplies would last only two weeks in the event of a disaster. Is two weeks enough for you?

If you had to take care of yourself during a catastrophe, how long do you think you would survive based on the supplies you currently have at home? How long could you survive with existing supplies?

How Prepared Do You Feel?

When asked how prepared they felt compared to their neighbors, 53% said they were "about as prepared" as others, while 85% believed that Americans, in general, are underprepared in the event of a catastrophe.

In the event of a catastrophe, do you think most Americans will be... How prepared is America?

How Much Time Would You Need to Evacuate?

Over half of respondents (52%) said they would need at least 30 minutes to evacuate in case of a disaster. Keep in mind, the faster you can act, the better prepared you will be.

How fast could you evacuate?

Would You Help a Neighbor?

If you find yourself unprepared, you may be lucky—24% of Americans said they would help neighbors by sharing resources or supplies in a disaster. But don't rely solely on others, as they might be just as unprepared. According to experts, 56.8% of Americans have a family communication plan, but only 40.8% have a plan for an extended stay at home during a disaster.

Let’s Get Prepared

There is peace in knowing that you and your family are prepared for emergencies. If you haven't started already, we strongly encourage you to begin building your food storage, emergency kits, and plans now. Start small and build up gradually each month or week. Make sure to discuss your emergency plans with your family so everyone knows what to do when disaster strikes.
