Backpackers Guide to Backpacking

28 Sep, 2016 3

A common mistake people make is thinking that emergency preparedness is limited to preparing just at home. However, it’s equally important to keep the same mindset when packing for camping or backpacking trips. Initially, it might seem challenging to balance packing light while ensuring you have all the essentials to survive and stay healthy. But with practice, packing for your outdoor adventures will become much easier.

Backpacking for Beginners The Basics of Backpacks

Whether you're going on a short day hike or a multi-week backpacking trip, having the right backpack makes a world of difference. The primary reason you need a good backpack is to evenly distribute weight. Packing too much weight in one area can cause discomfort and strain. The heaviest items should not be placed at the top or bottom. Instead, keep them close to your spine for better balance.

Backpacks come with different types of openings: top loading zippers, which require you to pack from the top, and side or front panel zippers, which make it easier to access essential items without unpacking everything.

Most experienced backpackers recommend packing sleepwear and sleeping mats at the bottom, as they are not needed immediately. On the other hand, always keep a headlamp or flashlight near the top for easy access. To ensure a comfortable load, adjust the shoulder, chest, and hip straps. Walk around with a loaded backpack for 20-30 minutes and assess where the weight feels most concentrated.

Size Does Matter

The first question you need to ask yourself when packing for a backpacking trip is: How long will the trip be, and how long could I survive in an emergency situation? If your trip is less than 6 weeks, a 30-50 liter backpack is ideal. For trips lasting longer than 6 weeks, a 45-65 liter backpack will provide enough space for your essentials.

Essential Items to Carry in Your Backpack

Clothing

- Base layer: Staying warm and dry is key. Most backpackers opt for moisture-wicking polyester or wool.
- Pants: Consider pants that can convert to shorts.
- Full or mid-cut boots: Stability around the ankles is crucial.
- Socks: Avoid cotton. Choose wool or synthetic fabrics for moisture-wicking properties.
- Hats, caps, or bandanas for sun protection.
- Light rain jacket: Or a heavier jacket if you expect bad weather.

Food & Food Storage

- Freeze-Dried Meals – Always pack more than needed to ensure you have enough in case of emergencies.
- Snacks: Trail mix, beef jerky, or energy bars are great options.
- Meal replacement shakes.
- Water – Hydration is essential!

Communication

- 2-Way Radios for staying connected.
- Personal Locator Beacon for emergencies.

Miscellaneous

- Earplugs for a good night’s sleep.
- GPS for navigation.
- Compass and a map for direction.
- Sleeping Mattress for comfort.
- Duct Tape for repairs.
- A deck of cards for entertainment: Deck of Cards.
- Fire Starter and Waterproof Matches.
- Water Filter to ensure safe drinking water.

When packing for your next backpacking trip, focus on bringing only the necessities. Don’t worry about bringing everything on your first trip—I've personally forgotten extra shirts and socks before! Prioritize the essentials: food, water, warmth, navigation, communication, first-aid, and sanitation.
