Military MREs are essential in emergency food storage, known for their durability, nutrition, and easy preparation. They offer the U.S. Military a reliable source of sustenance under extreme conditions, making them ideal for civilian preparedness.
What is an MRE?
First introduced in the 1980s, MREs replaced heavy, bulky food supplies. Self-contained and easy to heat, MREs come in durable packaging with a shelf life of around 5 years, depending on storage.
Do We Sell Military MREs?
Yes and no. Civilian MREs are available to the public, produced by the same contractors as military ones. However, civilian MREs lack some extras like chewing gum and toilet paper.
How to Use an MRE?
- Step 1: Open the package to reveal the entrée, already cooked and ready to eat, hot or cold.
- Step 2: Heat using a Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) with minimal water, or other heat sources (boiling water, fire).
- Step 3: Enjoy! Let it cool, tear open, and eat directly from the pouch.
How Long Will an MRE Last?
Stored under 75°F, MREs last up to 5 years. Cooler temperatures extend shelf life, but flavors may degrade over time.
How to Tell if Your MRE is Expired
MREs show a manufacture date in a 4-digit Julian code, not an expiration date. For example, “7304” indicates October 31, 2007. Bulging packaging or off smells signal expiration.
MRE Nutrition
Each MRE entrée provides around 230-350 calories, with high carb, protein, and fat content, designed for energy-intensive environments. Read more on MRE nutrition here.
