How to Make an Emergency Smoke Flare

29 Apr, 2017 3

This project should not be attempted without adult supervision. Adequate training in the ignition of incendiary or explosive materials may not be legal in your area. Misuse or careless use of tools or projects may result in serious injury, death, and/or permanent damage to equipment and property.

Smoke bomb fireworks are fun and can be used for emergency signaling.

Around the 4th of July, you might find smoke bomb fireworks in your local firework store. They're fun for all ages and can produce a lot of smoke in a matter of seconds. Smoke is one of the best ways to alert anyone that you’re in need of help, and in an emergency, red or orange colors are internationally associated with a distress signal. Having access to your own emergency smoke flare could become a real lifesaver!

However, this project should only be done outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Never attempt this indoors or in a garage. The recipe is designed to produce a massive amount of smoke, so make sure to inform your neighbors beforehand to avoid any concerns. Depending on where you live, igniting such a flare could be illegal, so be sure to check your local laws.

What You’ll Need

  • 60g of Saltpeter
  • 40g of Saratoga Farms Sugar
  • Skillet or Pan
  • Spatula
  • Paper Cup
  • Electric Burner
  • Food Scale
  • Outdoor Extension Cord
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Gloves
  • Goggles or Safety Glasses
  • Cylinder (cardboard tube, soup can, or soda can)
  • 5 pieces of 2" x 2" cardboard (if using cardboard tubes)
  • Hot Glue Gun (if using cardboard tubes)
  • Matches or Lighter
  • Cannon Fuse Cord

Step 1: Warm Up

Put on your gloves and goggles, and get ready to have fun like a mad scientist!

Step 2: Assemble

If you’re using cardboard, plug in your hot glue gun. Take a cardboard tube and cut it into 2-inch segments. Use the hot glue to attach the tube segments to the bottom of your 2-inch cardboard base. Don’t be shy with the glue—more is better!

Step 3: Measure & Cook

As always, do your cooking outside in a well-ventilated area. Plug in your extension cord, set up your electric burner, and place your skillet or pan on top. Use the food scale to measure 60 grams of Saltpeter and 40 grams of sugar. Add both ingredients to the skillet and turn the electric burner to medium-low heat. Stir with a spatula until the mixture starts to change color and the sugar caramelizes into a thick peanut butter-like consistency.

Step 4: Combine

Once the mixture is ready, carefully pour it into the prepared cylinder. Insert a 4-inch piece of cannon fuse cord into the mixture. Let the mixture cool for 15-20 minutes before proceeding.

Step 5: Test

Make sure you have your fire extinguisher ready. Place your smoke flare in an open area, away from any plants or other combustible materials. Light the fuse and step back 15-20 feet. Enjoy the colorful smoke as it signals your emergency distress!
